Stop. Right now, stop. Check your driver’s license and see if it is current. If not, make an appointment to get it renewed at your local Department of Public Safety Office. Keep your identification current. (And by current, I mean a valid state picture driver’s license or state identification card or a current passport.) It is a requirement that you have a valid id, driver’s license, or state identification card, to get notarial services. Your social security card does not work, it doesn’t have a picture or any identifying information to help confirm your identity. And if you find yourself in the hospital and need a medical directive, or POA, you have to have a current id to complete those forms, want to buy or sell your home…you need a. current id to complete the transaction. Do you need to get a copy of your birth certificate? The form requires a notarization so you need a current id and the list goes on and on. A valid state id with a picture is super important!
I have heard that the wait time for an appointment at the DPS office in Sherman is 3 months so really, stop. right. now. and. check. your. id. You may be able to renew your id online and that should be quicker but again, don’t wait until the last minute in case you have to schedule an in-person appointment.
You can renew your license/id at any DPS office in Texas so call the surrounding towns to see if their wait times are shorter. Help me, help you, and keep your id current!
